This page explains the basis on which content is provided on the Fernside Accounting website. It applies to articles, blog posts, guides, the MTD ITSA Diagnostic tool, the tax calculators, the downloadable MTD Landlord Playbook PDF, and any other content published here.
Information, not advice
All articles, guides, calculators and tools on this website are provided for general information and educational purposes only. They are not:
- Tax advice
- Accounting advice
- Financial advice
- Legal advice
- Business advice
- Investment advice
The content reflects our understanding of UK tax law and accounting practice at the date of publication. We make reasonable efforts to keep content current, but:
- Tax law changes frequently - at every Budget and Autumn Statement, and through finance acts in between
- Specific facts and circumstances change the answer - what's right for one business may be wrong for another
- HMRC's interpretation of rules can evolve through case law and updated guidance
- The interaction between different tax rules (income tax + NIC + dividend tax + corporation tax + VAT) is complex and beyond what general articles can capture
Calculator limitations specifically
The free calculators on this site (Sole Trader Tax, Take-Home Pay PAYE, Dividend Tax, Corporation Tax, VAT, Business Mileage) produce indicative figures for typical scenarios. They do not account for:
- Scottish residency - income tax bands differ; calculators assume England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates
- Pension contributions - would reduce taxable income/profit
- Marriage Allowance transfer - could shift £1,260 of personal allowance between spouses
- Salary sacrifice arrangements (childcare, cycle-to-work, EV schemes)
- Student loan repayments - Plan 1, 2, 4, 5 or Postgraduate Loan
- The High Income Child Benefit Charge - triggered when income exceeds £60,000
- Capital allowances on plant, machinery, vehicles, structures
- R&D tax credits, Patent Box, EIS/SEIS investment
- Losses brought forward from previous years
- Partnership and LLP profit allocations
- Non-domicile or remittance-basis taxation
- Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Stamp Duty
If any of these apply to you, the calculator output will not reflect your actual tax position. Use the calculators as a starting point for your thinking, not as the final answer.
No professional relationship from website use
Reading this website, downloading the MTD Landlord Playbook, using the calculators, or interacting with the MTD Diagnostic does not create an accountant-client relationship between you and Fernside Accounting Ltd. A client relationship only begins when:
- We have agreed to act for you in writing through a formal engagement letter
- You have completed our client onboarding (including identity verification under anti-money-laundering rules)
- The first fee invoice has been issued
Until those things have happened, we have no obligation to advise you, and you should not rely on website content as advice for your personal situation.
Accuracy of information
While we take reasonable care to ensure information is accurate at the time of publication, we make no warranties (express or implied) that:
- The content is current at the date you read it
- The content is complete
- The content will be free from errors
- The content is suitable for your specific circumstances
Tax rates, thresholds, and rules quoted on this site reflect the 2026/27 tax year (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027) unless stated otherwise. We update content when material changes happen - but there may be a lag, and we cannot guarantee continuous accuracy.
External links and references
Our articles often link to HMRC (gov.uk), Companies House, professional bodies, and other authoritative sources. These links are provided for your convenience. We have no control over those external sites and accept no responsibility for:
- The accuracy of information on those sites
- Whether the content has been updated since we linked to it

Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Fernside Accounting Ltd, its directors, employees, and agents are not liable for any loss or damage (including without limitation any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary or punitive damages) arising from:

This limitation applies even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Nothing in this disclaimer excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded under English law - including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or fraudulent misrepresentation.
What to do instead
If you need actual advice on your tax or accounting situation, options include:
- Become a Fernside client. Our packages start at £45/month and include real-time advice. Book a free 20-minute call to discuss whether we're the right fit.
- Speak to another qualified accountant or tax adviser. Look for someone with relevant qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CIOT, IAB, AAT) and professional indemnity insurance.
- For free general guidance: the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (litrg.org.uk), TaxAid (taxaid.org.uk for those on low incomes), and Citizens Advice can be useful starting points.
- For official HMRC guidance: gov.uk is authoritative. The HMRC helplines can answer factual questions.
