The Chancellor's Spring Statement 2025 was relatively light on major tax changes, but there were several announcements small business owners and the self-employed need to know about.
National Insurance threshold freeze continues
Income tax and NI thresholds remain frozen until 2028. As wages rise, more people are pulled into higher tax bands — a phenomenon known as fiscal drag.
National Living Wage increase
From April 2025, the NLW rose to £12.21/hour for workers aged 21 and over. If you employ staff, this directly affects your wage bill.
Business rates relief extended
The retail, hospitality and leisure business rates relief was extended for 2025/26 at a reduced rate of 40%, capped at £110,000 per business.
Making Tax Digital update
The government confirmed the MTD for Income Tax timetable is on track. From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 must comply.
